We have heard that a few of you are finding it hard to find the best location to park near our Addington New York Deli, here are some car parking tips.

If you’ve not discovered them yet there are some secret carparks near the railway lines, behind the billboards – here we have 4 dedicated New York Deli spaces, and 7 extra spaces that are for visitors. If you are hunting for the closest parks, there are 2 dedicated New York Deli spaces just in front of tyrecity. Check out the map below – hope it helps, and see you soon.

We are re-opening – better than ever – in Lincoln Road

We are very excited to announce a fantastic new concept store and believe that you, like us, will love it. All your old favourite sandwiches are on the menu, as well as new Breakfast Bagels and hot Kettle chips like you have never had before! Located in a lane off Lincoln Road, just before the railway line when heading out of town – this New York Deli has lots of natural light with a high ceiling and a great outlook.

From December 14 we will be open 7am until 8.30pm. Yes, you can come in for dinner!

Introducing the New Sandwich: Harlem Flank

The Harlem Flank, is a portuguese rubbed Flank steak cooked to perfection & drizzled with sweet chilli mayo sauce.

It comes in two sizes, Hero for $8.90, or with the salad for only $10.90 and also the smaller half hero size, Slider for $5.90 or $6.90 with salad.

The Hero

The term hero originated in New York City in the late 19th century when Italian labourers wanted a convenient lunch that reminded them of home. The name is credited to New York Herald Tribune food writer Clementine Paddleford, who wrote in the 1930s that you needed to be a hero to finish the gigantic Italian sandwich. Other sources speculate that the term hero derives from the Greek gyro, whose pronunciation is very similar to hero, and refers to a type of sandwich.

“Hero” (Heros as the plural so not to be confused with the word “Heroes”) remains the prevailing New York City term for most sandwiches on an oblong roll with a generally Italian flavour, in addition to the original described above.

The terms hero sandwich and hero, once largely associated with the New York City and Northern New Jersey area, are now too widely spread to warrant a specific regional label. This same sandwich is also called a submarine or a sub, esp. in the Northeastern and North Midland U.S., although this use has spread south along the Atlantic coast and as far west as Los Angeles. torpedo, though less common, has also spread to various regions.

The sandwich is called a grinder, chiefly in New England and the Inland North, though this use has spread to the South and West. Spuky is restricted to the Boston area, while wedge is a common synonym in Rhode Island and coastal Connecticut. Hoagy (or hoagie ) is used chiefly in New Jersey and Pennsylvania, esp. Philadelphia, though it too has spread to other regions.

Poor boy is chiefly New Orleans use, originally referring to a somewhat different sandwich in which distinct sections of fillings represented the courses of a meal. Cuban sandwich, usually referring to a grilled sandwich with ham, pork, cheese, etc., is chiefly used in Southern Florida as well as the New York City area.

Christchurch Earthquake Rocks New York Deli Victoria St

Our beloved little deli is no longer as the earthquake has caused the building to be declared structurally unsound! Fortunately we are still trading from our New Regent Street location and encourage all our customers to go there for “the best sandwich in town.”

In time we will reopen another deli in a similar location. We are committed to overcoming this adversity in the same way as the people of New York rebuilt their city after the Great fire of 1835. We will rise again and make the best sandwiches in town for you guys, the best customers in town!

St Patricks Day is huge in New York City

… so we will be going all out at New York Deli! – we are dressing up in costume, will have Irish music playing, are designing a special St Paddys Day Sandwich (perfect for soaking up a few pints of guiness), and have a free St Patricks danish with every sandwich.
